I HAVE CERTAINLY LEARNED, AND BY THE WAY, THIS IS A POP QUIZ, WHICH ONE OF OUR VALUES IS NOT ONE WORD BUT TO? WHICH ONE WOULD IT BE? DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION. CATHERINE JANICE GETS THE PRIZE. CERTAINLY, THAT MEANS A LOT AND I'VE LEARNED OVER THE YEARS THAT WE GET A BETTER PRODUCT WHEN WE DO GET DIVERSE OPINIONS AND INCLUDE VARIOUS STAKEHOLDERS. AS MY WIFE REMINDS ME ON A PERIODIC BASIS, WE GET BETTER DECISIONS WHEN SHE TELLS ME WHAT TO DO. THANK YOU ALL FOR BEING HERE. WELCOME TO THE NTSB US OBSERVATION OF ASIAN PACIFIC AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH. THE 2017 THEME IS UNITE OUR VOICES I SPEAKING TOGETHER. HEARING ASIAN PACIFIC AMERICAN CONJURING ASIAN PACIFIC AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH, WE CELEBRATE THE ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF ASIAN AMERICANS, NATIVE HAWAIIANS, PACIFIC ISLANDERS AND WE REFLECT ON THE MANY WAYS THEY HAVE ENRICHED OUR NATION. IVAN: THANK YOU FOR THE OPENING REMARKS. NOW I WOULD LIKE TO PRODUCE THE MEMBER OF THE NTSB, OUR KEYNOTE SPEAKER.

>> THANK YOU, IVAN. GOOD MORNING, EVERYONE. IT'S GREAT TO SEE ALL OF YOU HERE TODAY AT THE NTSB'S ASIAN AMERICAN PACIFIC HERITAGE MONTH CELEBRATION. I HAD THE PRIVILEGE OF INTRODUCING OUR GUEST AND KEYNOTE SPEAKER TODAY. I WOULD LIKE TO TAKE A MOMENT TO RECOGNIZE A GUEST THAT WE HAVE FROM VERY FAR AWAY. THE HEAD OF SUSTAINABLE TRANSPORTATION VISITING TODAY FROM TOKYO, JAPAN. THANK YOU. [APPLAUSE] OUR KEYNOTE SPEAKER IS A CROSS-CULTURAL STRATEGIST, MISS. ELY. HER BIOGRAPHY IS IN YOUR PROGRAM, BUT I WANTED TO GIVE YOU A FEW HIGHLIGHTS ABOUT HER IMPRESSIVE CAREER. SHE HAS WORKED AS A JOURNALIST FOR VOICE OF AMERICA AND C-SPAN AND MANY OTHER PLACES. SHE HAS WORKED IN THE CORPORATE WORLD AS A SPOKESPERSON AND AS A PUBLIC RELATIONS EXECUTIVE. SHE SAYS ONE OF HER MOST INTERESTING JOBS HAS A BALL HAS INVOLVED TRAVELING AROUND OUR NATION AND AROUND THE WORLD AS PART OF THE ADVANCED TEAM FOR THE WHITE HOUSE. HER VOICE MAY BE VERY FAMILIAR TO THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE AS THE VOICE AND VOICE COACH OF ROSETTA STONE, THE MANDARIN CHINESE PRODUCT. BUT HER BIO DOES NOT TELL YOU ABOUT HER PASSION TO HELP ASIAN-AMERICANS AND PACIFIC ISLANDERS IN OUR COMMUNITY TO SUCCEED AND TAKE THEIR PLACE AS PART OF AMERICA'S SUCCESS STORY. SHE SERVES ON THE BOARD OF GLOBAL DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION FOUNDATION AND SHE HAS BEEN APPOINTED BY MARYLAND'S GOVERNOR TO THE COMMISSION ON ASIAN AMERICAN AFFAIRS AS WELL AS TO THE GOVERNORS WELL MOBILE PROGRAM ADVISORY BOARD. SHE'S ALSO BEEN AN ADJUNCT LECTURER AT THE BUSINESS MEDICATIONS DEPARTMENT AT THE JOHN HOPKINS CARRY BUSINESS SCHOOL. TODAY, WE HAVE THE PLEASURE OF DOTTIE SHARE WITH US THE JOURNEY OF HAVING BECOME ANIMATE -- AN ASIAN-AMERICAN AND HOW SHE HELPS THE ASIAN-AMERICAN SAFETY BREAKDOWN BARRIERS TO ACHIEVE PROFESSIONAL AND PERSONAL GOALS. PLEASE JOIN ME IN GIVING A WARM WELCOME TO OUR KEYNOTE SPEAKER, THE MANAGING DIRECTOR OF TRANSPACIFIC COMMUNICATIONS, MISS. ELY -- MISS DOTTIE LEE.

DOTTIE: THANK YOU FOR THAT KIND INTRODUCTION. AND THANK YOU TO ACTING CHAIR SUMWALT FOR YOUR KIND REMARKS. I'M HONORED TO BE HERE WITH YOU ALL AT NTSB TO KICK OFF YOUR ASIAN-AMERICAN AND PACIFIC ISLAND HERITAGE MONTH CELEBRATION. THANKS TO THE OFFICE OF EQUAL OPPORTUNITY DIVERSITY INCLUSION AND THE DIRECTOR, MISS GATZ WHO IS JUST WALKING IN AND MISS MARY JONES, WHERE ARE YOU? AND ASHLEY REED AND THE WHOLE TEAM. I GUESS YOU LIKE ME THE LAST TIME. THANK YOU MR. HART OR SUPPORTING US AGAIN. MY NAME IS DOTTIE LEE. I'M JUST A GIRL FROM A SMALL CITY OF SEVEN POINT 8 MILLION PEOPLE IN CHINA. IT'S RIGHT THERE ON THE MAP. IF YOU SQUINT, YOU MIGHT SEE ME THERE. 7.8 MILLION IS SMALL IN CHINA. I'M GOING TO SWITCH TO MANDARIN CHINESE TO DELIVER MY REMARKS. I'M SURE WE CAN FIND SOMEONE TO INTERPRET FOR US. THANK YOU FOR BEING OUR MC TODAY. NOT ONLY ARE YOU GOOD-LOOKING AND SMART, BUT YOU PICK UP LANGUAGE LIKE THAT. THAT IS HELLO IN MANDARIN CHINESE, BUT YOU CAN GO BACK TO YOUR FOLKS AND TELL THEM YOU'VE BEEN TAUGHT HOW TO SPEAK CHINESE BY THE VOICE AND VOICE COACH OF ROSETTA STONE PATH MANDARIN PRODUCTS. THOSE OF US SHARE A RICH AND DIVERSE HERITAGE. HERE ARE SOME OF THE REASON -- REGIONS THAT WE COME FROM -- INDIA, PAKISTAN, PAKISTAN, NEPAL, INDONESIA, THAILAND, CAMBODIA, VIETNAM, SOMALIA, FIJI , TAIWAN, JAPAN, CHINA, HONG KONG, KOREA, MICRONESIA, HAWAII ISLANDS, AMERICAN SAMOA AND GUAM. SEE WHY IT TAKES AN ENTIRE MONTH OF MAY JUST TO COMMEMORATE US? SPEAKING OF OUR HERITAGE, SOMETHING OF THE WHOLE RANGE OF HISTORY -- OUR PEOPLE HAVE FOUGHT IN AMERICA'S WARS AND CONTINUE TO THIS LAND AND WE HAVE BEEN RELOCATED TO INTERNMENT CAMPS AND MADE OTHER SACRIFICES. IT HAS NOT ALWAYS BEEN EASY. THE CHINESE WERE THE FIRST ASIANS TO ARRIVE IN LARGE NUMBERS IN THE 1800S. THOSE WERE DARK CHAPTERS IN OUR HISTORY THAT I WILL NOT GET INTO TODAY. BUT WE HAVE ENJOYED MANY HIGHLIGHTS, MANY FIRSTS. AMONG THEM, THE FIRST EVENING NEWSCASTER -- I WAS MISTAKEN AS CONNIE CHUNG IN MY EARLIER CAREER. YOU KNOW WE ASIANS ALL LOOK ALIKE. SO WE HAVE COME A LONG WAY. ASIAN IMMIGRANTS HAVE MADE PROGRESS IN ASSIMILATION AND IN THE AMERICAN MOSAIC AND WE ARE A GROWING PRESENCE IN THE FEDERAL WORKFORCE. IN FISCAL YEAR 1976, ONLY 1.1% OF THE FEDERAL WORKERS WERE ASIAN-AMERICAN. BY 2014, THAT NUMBER HAD RISEN TO 5.6%. OUR COMPARISON TO AFRICAN-AMERICAN LEVERS AND TATIAN'S AT 18.1% AND NATIVE AMERICANS AT 1.7%. HISPANICS AT 8.4% AND WHITES ARE AT 64.7%. BY THE END OF 2016, OUR ASIAN-AMERICAN PARTICIPATION IS EIGHT POINT 28% COME MUCH HIGHER THAN THE FEDERAL AVERAGE. I THINK YOU HAVE SOMETHING TO DO WITH THAT. THOSE NUMBERS ARE SURE TO GROW IN THE COMING YEARS BECAUSE THE ASIAN POPULATION BECAME THE FASTEST GROWING ETHNIC DEMOGRAPHIC AND AMERICA OVER THE PAST DECADE, EXPERIENCING A 43% INCREASE FROM 10.2 MILLION IN 2000 TO 17.3 MILLION IN 2010. COMPRISING A 5.6% OF THE U.S. POPULATION. THAT IS ACCORDING TO THE LATEST FIGURES FROM THE U.S. CENSUS BUREAU'S REPORT. NEARLY TWO THIRDS OF API'S FOREIGN-BORN -- HOW MANY HERE ARE FOREIGN-BORN? LET'S SEE A SHOW OF HANDS. WE HAVE QUITE A FEW. ASIANS MAKE UP ONE THIRD OF THE NEARLY ONE MILLION ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS IN THIS COUNTRY EVERY YEAR. WE'VE BEEN CALLED THE MODEL MINORITY, BUT MORE ACCURATELY, THE FORGOTTEN MINORITY. WE FACE A NUMBER OF MISPERCEPTIONS AND STEREOTYPES. QUIET, HARD-WORKING, FAMILY ORIENTED, TECHNICALLY ORIENTED, GOOD AT MATH AND SCIENCE, NOT SO BAD SO FAR. BUT DO YOU KNOW WHY THEY CALL US ASIANS? BECAUSE WE MAKE A'S. JUST WANT TO MAKE SURE YOU ARE STILL LISTENING. BUT WE ARE ALSO SUPPOSED TO BE PASSIVE, NONCONFRONTATIONAL, AND EVEN ANTISOCIAL. SOME OF THESE STEREOTYPES MAY HAVE POSITIVE DIRECTOR STICKS, BUT THEY ARE NEVERTHELESS PART OF A BARRIER OF PRECONCEIVED NOTIONS, WHAT WE MIGHT CALL THE BAMBOO CEILING. WE MAY HAVE TO DRILL SOME HOLES IN THE BAMBOO CEILING INSTEAD OF MAKING CRACKS. THE BIAS BEHIND THE BAMBOO CEILING OFTEN CURTAILS THE MOVEMENT INTO THE UPPER TIERS OF ORGANIZATION. IN ADDITION, A APIS ARE HELD BACK AT A PARTICULAR LEVEL FOR A PROLONGED TIME. I THINK YOU KNOW THAT BECAUSE YOU MAY BE EXPERIENCING THAT. THERE ARE OTHER OBSTACLES AND BARRIERS BASED ON MYTHS AND LABELS. SOMETIMES, THOSE LABELS ARE CAUSED BY OUR OWN INABILITY TO TRANSCEND CULTURAL AND COMMUNICATION IMPEDIMENTS. WHILE THE FIRST GENERATION OF THE ASIAN-AMERICAN IMMIGRANTS HAD FOUGHT FOR THE RIGHT TO NATURALIZE AND OWN PROPERTY, ESSENTIALLY, THE RIGHT TO BE AMERICANS, THE LAST GENERATION BEGAN TO FIGHT FOR THE RIGHTS AS AMERICANS. I THINK OUR GENERATION, THE CHALLENGE FOR US IS THE FACT THAT SOMEBODY IMMIGRANT CIVIL RIGHTS ARE STILL DENIED, BUT NOT BY RACIST OR OUTDATED LAWS. IT IS BECAUSE THE LACK OF COMMUNICATION SKILLS OVER THE CULTURAL DIVIDE AND THAT IS PREVENTING US FROM ACHIEVING OUR FULL POTENTIAL IN MANY CASES. I WILL SHOW YOU SOME OF THE INTERESTING NUMBERS IN THESE SLIDES. SOME OF YOU MAY HAVE SEEN THEM DURING THE LAST TIME OF THE YEAR DOING A TRAINING. 15% OF THE U.S. WORKFORCE IS FOREIGN-BORN. THAT IS THE RED OR PINK SLICE THERE. SINCE 1996, THE FOREIGN-BORN WORKFORCE ENTERING THE U.S. IS AN UP TREND AND IT'S GOING TO GO UP EVEN HIGHER. THE NEXT SLIDE, I WOULD LIKE TO DRAW YOUR ATTENTION TO THE HIGHEST, TALLEST COLUMN. THAT COLUMN REPRESENTS THE FOREIGN-BORN WORKFORCE FROM THE AGES OF 25 TO 54. IT OUTWEIGHS THE SAME AGE BRACKET OF NATIVEBORN WORKFORCE, THE SAME COLORS YOU TRAVEL TO THE RIGHT-HAND SIDE. I JUST BARELY MADE IT INTO THE BRACKET. WHICH SIDE OF IT, TOP OR BOTTOM? I'LL LET YOU GUESS. LET'S TAKE A LOOK AT THIS HIGH CHART. ONE ON THE LEFT, THAT IS 15% OF THE FOREIGN-BORN WORKFORCE. ABOUT HALF OF THAT IS HISPANIC. IF YOU TRAVEL UP NORTH, THE LEFT CORNER, IT IS THE ASIAN AMERICANS, IT'S SHY OF A QUARTER AT 22.9%. THE REST, THIS PIE HERE IS NATIVEBORN. OVERWHELMING MAJORITIES OF WHITE NON-HISPANIC IN THAT PURPLE COLOR. THIS NEXT CHART IS THE PERCENTAGE OF A APIS. WE ARE ABOUT 5% OF THE U.S. POPULATION HERE AND ASIAN AMERICANS, ONLY A 1.5% AND FORTUNE CEOS, A LITTLE BIT MORE. HOWEVER, IF YOU COMPARE THE COLLEGE STUDENT POPULATION VERSUS THE COLLEGE PRESIDENTS, A BIG DISCREPANCY. WHEN I FIRST ARRIVED, I HAD MY ISSUES TO DEAL WITH. I DID NOT KNOW HOW TO PLAY SOME CULTURAL GAMES AND CORPORATE GAMES AS I MOVED UP IN MY CAREER. FROM THE CULTURE SHOCK INFLICTED ON ME BY MOBILE, ALABAMA WHERE I FIRST ENDED -- WHERE I FIRST LANDED. I WAS IN THE DEEP SOUTH. I COULD GET A SOUTHERN DRAWL GOING IF YOU WOULD LIKE ME TO. TO BE THE ONLY PERSON FROM CHINA WORKING AT A TELEVISION STATION IN WASHINGTON JUST A FEW BLOCKS FROM HERE. I'M SURE YOU HAVE WATCHED C-SPAN A FEW TIMES, TO WORKING FOR THE WHITE HOUSE IN THE EARLY 90'S. I HAVE COME A LONG WAY MYSELF. EARLY ON, I WAS LOST TRYING TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO COMMUNICATE EFFECTIVELY ACROSS THE CULTURAL HURDLE. I DID NOT HAVE A VOICE. FEARING MY ACCENT AND OTHER VACATION CHALLENGES WOULD BE LOST. I DID NOT KNOW HOW TO PLAY THE CORPORATE GAME AND DID NOT KNOW HOW TO RAISE MY PROFILE. JUST LIKE MANY OF THE PEOPLE WE ARE HELPING THESE DAYS. MANY OF THE PEOPLE WHO KNOW ME KNOW THAT I AM NO SHRINKING VIOLET. BUT IN MY EARLY DAYS, I WAS NOT ALWAYS ABLE TO SPEAK UP FOR MYSELF EFFECTIVELY. I WORKED HARD TO ADDRESS OVER THEM AND DEVELOPED A SERIES OF TRAINING PROGRAMS DESIGNED TO HELP ASIAN-AMERICAN AND OTHER IMMIGRANTS TO OVERCOME COMMUNICATION ISSUES AND CULTURAL AND LINGUISTIC PROBLEMS THAT THEY POST. WE DID EFFECTIVE PERSONAL BRANDING RIGHT THERE. EMPOWERING THE ASIAN-AMERICAN COMMUNITY IS THE DRIVING FORCE OF MY COMMUNICATIONS ABOUT 20 YEARS AGO. SINCE THEN, I HAVE WORKED WITH MANY FEDERAL AGENCIES, CORPORATIONS AND ORGANIZATIONS AND INDIVIDUALS. THIS IS A CONCEPT WE TEACH ALL THE TIME. WHAT IS THE CULTURE RATION? WHAT IS THE PROCESS? WHERE ARE YOU IN THAT PROCESS AND HOW CAN ONE BE IN CULTURE RATED? IS THE PROCESS OF GOING FROM ONE PLACE TO ANOTHER. IT DOES NOT HAVE TO BE FROM CHINA TO MOBILE OR WASHINGTON TO MEXICO OR PRIVATE TO PUBLIC OR VICE VERSA OR CIVILIAN TO MILITARY OR VICE VERSA. WHEREVER YOU GO, THIS PROCESS NECESSITATES A WHOLE NEW WAY OF THINKING, FEELING AND COMMUNICATING. ALL THREE THINGS HAVE TO HAPPEN TOGETHER. THE PROCESS HAS FOUR STAGES -- EUPHORIA, PROFOUND DIFFERENCES, ALSO KNOWN AS CULTURE SHOCK, BEING STUCK IN LIMBO AND FINALLY , ACCEPTANCE. I CAN WALK YOU THROUGH THE PROCESS, BUT WHERE ARE YOU IN THE PROCESS? THAT IS NOT AN IMPORTANT QUESTION. THE MORE IMPORTANT QUESTION IS WHERE IS THAT COLLEAGUE OF YOURS IN THE PROCESS? IF YOU SEE THAT PERSON STRUGGLING, YOU SHOULD REACH OVER AND PULL THEM OUT OF THAT LEDGE AND GET THEM GOING TO THE FINAL STEP OF THIS PROCESS. HOW CAN ONE BE IN CULTURE RATED? WE WERE AT THE COAST GUARD LONG TIME AGO AND ONE YOUNG COAST GUARD RAISED HIS HAND AND SAID I KNOW HOW TO BE IN CULTURE RATED. I SAID HOW? HE SAID BY WATCHING AMERICAN TV, HE COULD BE AN CULTURE RATED. I SAID YOU MIGHT BE CAREFUL BECAUSE YOU MIGHT HAVE TO PICK UP SOME REALLY COLORFUL LANGUAGE AND THAT THAT -- YOU MIGHT PICK UP SOME COLORFUL LANGUAGE AND THOSE THINGS DON'T BELONG IN THE WORKPLACE. YOU COULD UNDERGO TRAINING DESIGNED FOR THIS VERY PURPOSE. WHAT I HAVE SEEN IS MANY PEOPLE OF ASIAN AND PACIFIC ISLANDER HERITAGE SEE A REAL AND URGENT NEED TO BETTER THEMSELVES, TO INCREASE THEIR PARTICIPATION AT VARIOUS LEVELS IN PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SECTORS AS WE SERVE THE PUBLIC. BUT MANY OF US NEED BETTER TOOLS TO SUCCEED BECAUSE CULTURAL COMEDIC KAISHA AND TOOLS THAT ARE CULTURE -- THAT ARE CRUCIAL IN TODAY'S MULTICULTURAL AND DIVERSE WORKFORCE. I WAS HELPED ALONG THE WAY AND EMPOWERED, SO I PUT MY EFFORTS TO WORK HELPING OTHERS WHO FACED SIMILAR CHALLENGES AND SITUATIONS. IT HAS BEEN A REWARDING AND HEARTWARMING JOURNEY TO HELP UNITE OUR COMMUNITY TO SPEAK TOGETHER. AT THE CORE OF THE CULTURAL COMMUNICATION TRAINING IS EFFECTIVE TO MEDICATION THROUGH ACCENT REDUCTION IN MODIFICATION. LET ME TELL YOU A QUICK STORY ABOUT THAT. WHEN I BECAME A CORPORATE SPORTS -- CORPORATE SPOKESPERSON, I FEARED MY ACCENT. YOU KNOW THE ONE THAT IS CHINESE WITH BRITISH TAUGHT ENGLISH AND THEN MARINATED A FEW YEARS IN ALABAMA WOULD BE A LIABILITY. I TOLD MY SUPERVISOR I NEEDED TO NEUTRALIZE AND MODIFY MY ACCENT TO PERFORM MY DUTIES BETTER. SHE WAS SUPPORTIVE. REDUCING MY ACCENT WAS PERHAPS THE SINGLE BEST THING I EVER DID TO MY CAREER. I WROTE A COLUMN ABOUT THAT IN A MAGAZINE CALLED ACCENTUATE THE POSITIVE. MORE THAN JUST IMPROVE MY ACCENT, IT OPENED UP A NEW AND EXCITING AND DIFFERENT WORLD FOR A KID FROM CHINA. ALLOWING ME TO GO PLACES AND DO THINGS AND MEET PEOPLE ALL OVER THE WORLD THAT I COULD NEVER BEFORE HAVE IMAGINED. I COULD ALMOST GUARANTEE IF I HAD NOT CHANGED THE WAY I COMMUNICATED, THERE IS NO WAY I COULD WORK FOR THE WHITE HOUSE. AND I'M CERTAIN I WOULD NOT BE STANDING HERE TODAY AS A KEYNOTE SPEAKER CELEBRATING WITH YOU ALL. I HEAR EMPLOYEES ASKING FOR THE SAME TYPE OF TRAINING. IT USUALLY GOES LIKE THIS -- I UNDERSTAND YOUR ENGLISH. YOU ARE GOOD ENOUGH. NOT TOO LONG AGO, I HAD A CONVERSATION. COMMUNICATION SKILLS CAN WAIT. WHILE HE WAS TELLING ME ALL OF THIS, HE WAS MAKING ALL SORTS OF MISTAKES, GRAMMATICAL AND OTHERWISE AND HE SAW HIS CAN OCCASION SKILLS COULD WAIT. SO, WE HAVE TO CHALLENGES. ONE IS TO EDUCATE OURSELVES ABOUT WHAT WE NEED TO SUCCEED AND TO MAKE SURE ROADBLOCKS ARE CLEARED AWAY. REDUCING ACCENTS IS ONLY ONE OF THE VERY FIRST STEPS IN GENERATING THE COMMUNICATION SKILLS WHICH WILL ALLOW US TO GROW IN OUR PROFESSIONAL AND PERSONAL LIVES. YOU MUST KNOW NOT ONLY HOW TO SPEAK BUT WHEN TO SPEAK UP AND EFFECTIVE CAN OCCASION SKILLS ARE CRITICAL. THERE'S A LOT FOR ALL OF US, NOT JUST LEARNING ABOUT CULTURAL MANNERS AND ETIQUETTE. THIS IS REALLY A CASE OF WHAT YOU DON'T KNOW CAN HURT YOU. SOME OF THE MANNERS AND ETIQUETTE THAT FOREIGN-BORN APIS BRING WITH US MAY OR MAY NOT BE ACCEPTABLE AND WESTERN CULTURES. WE HAVE TO LEARN HOW TO ADJUST TO THAT AND NOT GIVE UP OUR IDENTITY AND THE THINGS THAT MAKE US UNIQUE AND TO MAKE SURE WE DON'T DO THINGS THAT GET BETWEEN US AND THE PEOPLE WE ARE TRYING TO REACH. A PERFECT EXAMPLE IS EYE CONTACT. MANY OF US ARE TAUGHT TO NOT LOOK PEOPLE WITH AUTHORITY DIRECTLY IN THE EYE BECAUSE THAT IS A SIGN OF DISRESPECT AND AGGRESSION. IN WESTERN CULTURE, NOT LOOKING PEOPLE IN THE EYE LEAVES A NEGATIVE IMPRESSION. I HEAR IT ALL THE TIME. A LOT OF A APIS WHO DID NOT GET THE JOB THEY WANTED BECAUSE OF THIS TYPE OF CULTURAL MISSED YOU. WRITING SKILLS, LEADERSHIP ABILITIES, THOSE ARE THINGS WE MUST WORK HARD TO MANAGE AND WE SEE IN OUR TRAINING OVER AND OVER AGAIN ONCE A PERSON MASTERS SPEAKING WITHOUT FEAR, THE MANAGEMENT SKILLS COME A LOT EASIER. ANOTHER AREA A APIS ARE A EAGER TO LEARN ABOUT IS NEEDING TO KNOW WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO TO ADVANCE YOUR CAREER. I WAS GROWING UP IN CHINA AND I WAS LISTENING TO VOICE OF AMERICA BROADCAST. I WAS ABOUT NINE YEARS OLD. I DREAMED OF BECOMING AV 08 BROADCASTER AND WENT ON TO BE A NEWSPAPER REPORTER OUT OF CALL -- OUT OF COLLEGE IN CHINA. I SHARE MY CHILDHOOD DREAM WAS MIKE MUTATIONS PROFESSOR, DR. WOLF IS A DEMAND WHO FOUNDED THE L.A. LIVED IN MOBILE, ALABAMA. LATER, I WAS INTRODUCED TO HIM. MRS. GIBBONS SAW SOME POTENTIAL IN THIS YOUNG PERSON AND ENCOURAGE ME TO APPLY FOR A JOURNALISM SCHOLARSHIP. THEN SHE BOUGHT ME A TICKET AND I DIDN'T HAVE A CHOICE BUT TO COME UP HERE. THROUGH THAT INTERNSHIP, I APPLIED FOR ANOTHER OPPORTUNITY AT VOICE OF AMERICA. AFTERWARDS, I WAS OFFERED A JOB, YOU GUESSED IT, WORKING AS A BROADCASTER AT VOICE OF AMERICA. MY VERY FIRST JOB IN AMERICA AND MY CHILDHOOD DREAM CAME TRUE. IF A NINE-YEAR-OLD FROM A SMALL TOWN THOUSANDS OF MILES AWAY WHO COULD COME TO AMERICA AND DID NOT SPEAK A LICK OF ENGLISH TO ACHIEVE HER DREAM, YOU CAN DO ANYTHING. YOU CAN DO JUST ABOUT ANYTHING IN THIS BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY OF OURS, THE LAND OF OPPORTUNITY. AND WHAT A WONDERFUL JOURNEY IT HAS THEN. I'M SURE YOU HAVE MANY GOOD NETWORKING STORIES TO TELL AND I HEAR THEM ALL THE TIME AS WE TEACH POWER NETWORKING AND EFFECTIVE PERSONAL BRANDING. I WROTE A COLUMN ABOUT THAT ALSO -- I NETWORKED MY WAY ALL THE WAY TO THE TOP OF THE WHITE HOUSE WITH THE HELP OF USING A BRAND THAT RESONATES WITH PEOPLE. I WROTE A COLUMN ABOUT IT. IT'S CALLED "WHEN A DOOR OPENS, WALK THROUGH IT. THERE'S A LOT OF WORK, BUT IT IS DOABLE. I SEE IT HAVING POSITIVE EFFECTS FIRSTHAND THROUGH OUR TRAINING. LET ME SWITCH TONES. ONE THING I AM CONCERNED ABOUT IS THE LOW PARTICIPATION RATE IN THE WORKFORCE FOR A APIS. IT REQUIRES A COORDINATED EFFORT FROM LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT, DIVERSITY OFFICES AND EMPLOYEES AND THEMSELVES ALL HAVE A ROAD TO PLAY -- ROLE TO PLAY AND EVERYONE MUST BE ACCOUNTABLE AND TAKE RESPONSIBILITY TO MAKE SURE OF A LEVEL PLAYING FIELD. THAT SUPPORTS A DIVERSE AND PRODUCTIVE WORKFORCE AND FAIR AND INCLUSIVE WORK ENVIRONMENT FREE FROM DISCRIMINATION AND HARASSMENT. I HAVE A QUESTION. DO YOU KNOW WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR MY COMING TO AMERICA? IT'S NOT MY FATHER, IT'S NOT EVEN THE. IT IS THIS MAN RIGHT HERE, RICHARD NIXON, THE 37TH RESIDENT OF THE U.S. THIS IS A YOUNG ME WHILE I WAS A PRODUCER. THE MAN IN THE MIDDLE IS BRIAN LAMB, CEO AND FOUNDER OF C-SPAN. RICHARD NIXON CAME TO DO AN INTERVIEW OF HIS BOOK, SEIZE THE MOMENT, WHICH WAS A SAYING OUT OF MAO'S FAMOUS BOOK. I HAD A CONVERSATION WITH THE PRESIDENT AND THANKED HIM FOR BRINGING ME TO AMERICA AND OPENING THE JOY -- OPENING THE DOOR TO CHINA. THE DESIRE TO BE PART OF A COMMUNITY, TO BE PART OF SOMETHING DISTINCTLY OUR OWN HAS BEEN A DISTINCTIVE FORCE IN HISTORY. IT IS A FORCE THAT CAN HAVE LASTING POSITIVE EFFECTS. OF COURSE, IT HAS SOMETIMES BEEN USED TO SET UP WALLS AND GREAT DIVISIONS BETWEEN PEOPLE. WE HAVE TO STRIVE TO MAKE SURE WE ARE INCLUSIVE AND MINDFUL OF THE HERITAGE OTHERS ENJOY. BUT WHAT MAKES A COMMUNITY? IT'S NOT WHERE YOU ARE FROM. IT'S NOT A FACT WE MAY SHARE AS THE CORE CULTURAL TIES. THE COMMUNITY IS WHAT HOLDS US TOGETHER AND WE CAN HOLD ON TO THAT SPIRIT OF COMMUNITY EVEN AS WE TAKE OUR PLACE IN THIS WIDER WORLD, CONTINUING TO AND BENEFITING FROM THE BEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD. HERE IS AN EXAMPLE OF WHAT I MEAN BY SPIRIT DEFINING COMMUNITY. DURING THE SECOND TERM OF THE CLINTON ADMINISTRATION, I TRAVELED AROUND THE COUNTRY AND THIS WORLD HANDLING MEDIA EVENTS AND ASSIGNMENTS FOR THE PRESIDENT AND FIRST LADY. I WAS ON A TEAM THAT SET UP PRESIDENTIAL EVENTS TO SET UP THE MESSAGES THAT THE PRESIDENT WANTED TO SEND WAS DELIVERED. THIS INVOLVED THE LOGISTIC SECURITY, PLANNING OF PRECISE MOVEMENTS, CREATION OF BACKDROPS AND STAGE MANAGING LARGE EVENTS AND IT MEANT UNDERSTANDING THE NEEDS OF THE WHITE HOUSE PRESS CORPS TO MAKE SURE THEY GOT EVERYTHING THEY NEEDED. AS PART OF A SWING THROUGH WHAT WESTERNERS LIKE TO CALL SOUTH ASIA, PRESIDENT CLINTON BAND -- PLANNED A VISIT TO A REMOTE VILLAGE IN IMPOVERISHED BANGLADESH. FOR DAYS BEFORE HIS ARRIVAL, OUR TEAM WORKED WITH THE VILLAGERS WHO WERE SO PROUD OF THEIR COMMUNITIES TO GET EVERYTHING READY TO THE STAGE WHERE PRESIDENT CLINTON WAS GOING TO SPEAK. WE HAD TO ALAN'S THE NEED OF THE TRAMPLING WORD OF MEDIA PEOPLE WITH THE FACT THAT THE VILLAGE WAS A A SICK SETTING. INFRASTRUCTURE IS TO GRANT A WORD TO USE HERE. WE TRAVELED DOWN A MUDDY RIVER TO GET TO THE BACK COUNTRY WHERE THE VILLAGE WAS. THE VILLAGES WERE VERY POOR BY AMERICAN STANDARDS, VERY -- BARELY ABOVE SUBSISTENCE IN SOME PLACES, BUT THEY WERE RICH IN THEIR JOY OF LIFE. THE VISIT BY AN AMERICAN PRESIDENT WAS BY FAR THE BIGGEST AND MOST IMPORTANT THING WHICH HAD EVER HAPPENED IN THAT PART OF THE COUNTRY. BUT THE AFTERNOON BEFORE ARRIVAL, WE GOT WORD THE EVENT WAS CANCELED BECAUSE OF A SECURITY ISSUE. THE SECRET SERVICE WOULD NOT TELL US WHAT THE DETAILS WERE, BUT THE PRESIDENT TOLD ME YEARS LATER THAT WHEN HE WAS WHAT -- WHEN HE WAS WRITING HIS MEMOIRS THAT MISSILES HAD BEEN DISCOVERED IN THE JUNGLE. HIS HELICOPTER WOULD HAVE TO FLY OVER AND IT WAS BELIEVED THIS WAS THE WORK OF OSAMA BIN LADEN ABOUT ONE AND A HALF YEARS BEFORE 9/11. AND THE VILLAGERS WERE CRUSHED AND MOMENTARILY, WE HATCHED A PLAN. IF THE PRESIDENT COULD NOT COME TO THE VILLAGE, THE VILLAGE WOULD HAVE TO COME TO THE PRESIDENT. WE SPENT THE NEXT 18 HOURS WORKING NONSTOP CARDING UP THE BILL -- CARVING UP THE VILLAGE AS MUCH AS WE COULD. WE TOOK OVER THE COURTYARD AND TRANSFORMED IT INTO A MINI VERSION OF THE VILLAGE USING THEIR COLORFUL TAPESTRY AND RUGS AND ARTIFACTS. PROVIDING FOOD AND MUCH LAUGHTER. THE PRESIDENT LOVED IT, THE VILLAGERS LOVED IT AND THE PRESS LOVED IT. I LOVED IT, EVEN IF I WAS COMPLETELY EXHAUSTED. YOU MAY RECALL ON THAT TRIP TO INDIA, HE HAD TO USE A DECOY AIR FORCE ONE BEFORE LANDING IN INDIA. IT WAS A VERY DANGEROUS TRIP TO SAY THE LEAST. IT WAS A JOYOUS OCCASION AND IT WAS PROPELLED BY THE SPIRIT OF THESE PEOPLE, PEOPLE WHO DID NOT HAVE MUCH IN THE WAY OF MATERIAL THINGS, BUT WHO NEVERTHELESS HAD PRIDE IN THEIR HERITAGE IN WHO THEY WERE. IF THINGS HAD GONE OFF AS ORIGINALLY PLANNED, I MIGHT HAVE ONLY THE FAINTEST MEMORY OF ONE SUCH EVENT. BUT THE MEMORIES OF THAT CELEBRATION OF CULTURE, THAT IN DURING SENSE OF COMMUNITY, THAT HAS STAYED WITH ME ALL THESE YEARS AS A VIBRANT REMINDER OF THE POSITIVE IMPACT OF OUR SHARED SENSE OF IDENTITY -- POSITIVE IMPACT OUR SHARED IDENTITY CAN HAVE. MY WORK IS ABOUT BREAKING DOWN CULTURAL BARRIERS. I'M A QUICK STORY TO SHARE. IN 2008, I ACCOMPANIED THE THEN AMBASSADOR OF CHINA AND HIS WIFE TO KENTUCKY, ONE OF OUR CORPORATE CLIENTS. I SENT MEMOS TO THE BOARD AND LEADERSHIP TEAM ABOUT THE DO'S AND DON'TS, THE ETIQUETTES OF DOING THIS -- OF DOING BUSINESS WITH CHINA, GIVING GIFTS OR WHAT NOT TO GIVE SUCH AS CLOCKS OR UMBRELLAS AND HOW TO RECEIVE A DISTINGUISHED DIPLOMAT LIKE THE CHINESE AMBASSADOR. THE AMBASSADOR MET WITH THE GOVERNOR TOWARD THE FACILITY OF A CLIENT AND HAD A BRIEFING WITH THE BOARD AND LEADERSHIP TEAM. THEN, THE AMBASSADOR HAD AN EDITORIAL BRIEFING WITH THE DAILY NEWSPAPER IN TOWN WHOSE NAME SHALL REMAIN NAMELESS. EVERYTHING WAS PERFECT. YOU HEAR A BUS COMING AND AT THE END, AS WE WERE LEAVING, THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF PRESENTED THE AMBASSADOR AND HIS WIFE WITH SOME UMBRELLAS WITH THE NEWSPAPER'S LOGOS ON THEM. YOU SHOULD HAVE SEEN THE FACES OF OUR DISTINGUISHED GUESTS, EVEN AS SEASONED DIPLOMATS. I GUESS THE MEMO NEVER REACHED THE NEWSPAPER, NEITHER DID THE NEWSPAPER DO ANY HOMEWORK ON RECEIVING THE CHINESE AMBASSADOR. I HAVE BEEN PRIVILEGED TO PLAY A SMALL ROLE IN PROVIDING SOME OF THE HELP OUR COMMUNITY NEEDS TO TRANSFORM OUR CAREERS AND BREAKING DOWN THE BARRIERS THAT ARE IN THE WAY. IT HAS BEEN AN EXCITING AND CHALLENGING JOURNEY. WHILE WE CELEBRATE OUR ACHIEVEMENTS, LET'S REMEMBER OUR HERITAGE, THE ONE WHO CAME BEFORE US, THE ONES WHO PAVED THE WAY AND THE ONES WERE STILL FIGHTING. LET'S NOT FORGET THE CHALLENGES, REAL AND PERCEIVED THAT WE ARE FACING. I NEED YOUR HELP GETTING THE MESSAGE OUT. NOT JUST THE AAPIS IN THE ROOM, BUT THOSE WHO CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE, INCLUDING AN TRAINING MORE AAPIS IN THE WORKFORCE HERE AND IN THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT. AS I CLOSE, I WANT TO LEAVE YOU WITH THIS -- IF YOU HAVE TALENT, CONTRIBUTE YOUR TALENT TO THE COMMUNITY. IF YOU HAVE TIME, OFFER YOUR TIME. IF YOU HAVE MONEY, DONATE GENEROUSLY TO COMMUNITY CAUSES. MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL, GIVE YOUR HEART TO SUPPORT AND EMPOWER OUR COMMUNITY. YOU WILL RECEIVE BACK MUCH MUCH MORE THAN YOU GIVE. BY DOING SO, WE WILLFULLY TAKE OUR PLACE IN THIS WONDERFUL TAPESTRY OF AMERICA. WE WILL HELP PROPEL OUR COUNTRY FORWARD TO MEET THE CHALLENGES OF A RAPIDLY CHANGING WORLD AND WE WILL BE MORE FULFILLED IN OUR PROFESSION AND I HOPE IN OUR LIVES. HAPPY ASIAN-AMERICAN AND PACIFIC ISLANDERS HERITAGE MONTH. [APPLAUSE] YES, MR. CHAIRMAN? THE CHAIRMAN ASKED A QUESTION -- WHY GIVING UMBRELLAS AND CLOCKS WOULD BE CONSIDERED AN APPROPRIATE? THE CHARACTERS FOR GIVING UMBRELLAS OR CLOCKS, OR LET'S JUST SAY UMBRELLA, IT SOUNDS THE SAME AS BREAKING UP. SO BACK IN CHINA AND SOME OTHER PLACES, IF YOU GIVE PEOPLE AN UMBRELLA, IT'S A SYMBOL OF BREAKING UP. FOR THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF, THE MOMENT THE AMBASSADOR FINISHED THE EDITORIAL BRIEFING, HE SAID I'M SEVERING THE TIE WITH YOU. EVEN THOSE SEASONED DIPLOMATS -- AND HE WAS NOT USED TO THAT GESTURE. JUST LIKE IF WE GO TO ANOTHER COUNTRY, IF SOMEONE FLIPS US OFF, EVEN IF THEY MAY NOT KNOW THAT IS THE SYMBOL HERE, YOU WILL BE OFFENDED. THEY SOUND SIMILAR. THAT'S A GOOD QUESTION. ANY OTHER QUESTIONS?

>> IS IT BETTER TO GIVE SOMETHING PHYSICAL THAT COULD DIMINISH OVER TIME OR SOMETHING THAT MAY BE A SYMBOL?

>> IT DEPENDS ON THE OCCASION. YOU MAY WANT TO PRESENT A MEMENTO. SOME PEOPLE YOU MIGHT PRESENT AN ART THESE. CHINESE AND ASIANS ARE NOTORIOUS FOR PRESENTING AND ARE THESE BECAUSE WE THINK IT IS A SYMBOL. IT COULD BE BY A NOTED ARTIST OR A COULD BE BY YOURSELF. THAT COULD BE EVEN MORE MEANINGFUL, THAT YOU TOOK THE TIME TO COMMISSION AN ART PIECE. GOOD QUESTION. ANYBODY ELSE?

>> [INAUDIBLE] THERE ARE TWO QUESTIONS. ONE IS THE NAME OF THE COMPANY, TRANSPACIFIC. I THINK THAT IS SELF-EXPLANATORY. WE WORK ACROSS CULTURES. THE CHINESE CHARACTERS DON'T REALLY TRANSLATE. THE FIRST ONE IS THE LAST CHARACTER OF MY FATHER'S NAME AND THE SECOND CHARACTER IS THE LAST CHARACTER OF MY MOTHER'S NAME AND MY FATHER HAD BEEN A LONG-TERM, LIFETIME PUBLISHER, POET AND MANY THINGS. TRULY A PIONEER AND SOMEONE I ASPIRE TO. I FOLLOW IN HIS FOOTSTEPS AS A REPORTER. ASIAN-AMERICAN IS SUCH A BIG GROUP, EVEN AMONG ONE CULTURAL ETHNIC GROUP. JUST SAY CHINESE. I'M CHINESE AND YOU ARE CHINESE. YOU HAVE CHINESE FROM MAINLAND, CHINESE FROM TAIWAN, CHINESE FROM SINGAPORE, YOU HAVE THE CHINESE DIASPORA OVERSEAS. WITHIN THE SAME ETHNIC GROUP, YOU HAVE DIFFERENT SUBGROUPS. IT'S A CHALLENGE TO LUMP US ALL TOGETHER. AAPIS HAVE SUCH A DIVERSE BACKGROUND AT DIFFERENT LANGUAGES. EVEN AMONG THE CHINESE AND OUR UPBRINGING AND SUCH, I DON'T WANT TO USE THE WORD ASSIMILATION, WHEN IT COMES TO ACCULTURATION, THE GOAL IS THE SAME. IT DOESN'T MATTER IF YOU ARE FROM THE MONGOLIA AREA OR THE SOUTH COAST AREA. THE SAME GOAL THAT SHOULD DRIVE THE PROCESS -- I MAY ACCULTURATED A LITTLE DIFFERENTLY BECAUSE I WENT TO MOBILE, ALABAMA AND PICKED UP THE SOUTHERN DRAWL AND HAD TO LOSE THAT. THAT IS MY JOURNEY. THAT GOT ME TO BE WHERE I AM TODAY. I'M SURE IT'S NOT THE SAME AS YOU AND SEVERAL OTHERS IN THIS ROOM. IT IS COMPLICATED, BUT THE END GOAL IS THE SAME. JUST THE PROCESS OF EATING THERE , THE PROCESS OF ACCULTURATION IS DIFFERENT AND WE WORK IN THE SPHERE OF HELPING PEOPLE TO SHORTEN THAT ACCULTURATION PROCESS SO YOU DON'T HAVE TO MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE I DID TO MAKE THAT ACCULTURATION PROCESS FASTER, SHORTER, SMOOTHER OR BETTER. DOES THAT ANSWER YOUR QUESTION? ANYONE ELSE

>> YOU SHARE WITH US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR FIRST IMPRESSIONS ABOUT BEING IN THE SOUTH AND THAT BEING A FRAMEWORK FOR THE REST OF THE UNITED STATES?

DOTTIE: I LANDED IN MOBILE, NOT BECAUSE I PICKED MOBILE, BUT THE UNIVERSE OPENED UP AND I GOT A FREE RIDE TO THE UNIVERSITY. I THINK IT WAS GOOD FOR A KID FROM A SMALL TOWN OF 7.8 MILLION PEOPLE TO END UP IN A SMALLER PLACE, SOUTHERN HOSPITALITY IS SOMETHING I THINK WAS GOOD FOR ME AND I GOT A LOT OF PERSONAL ATTENTION ON CAMPUS. I THINK I WAS THE ONLY PERSON FROM CHINA THERE. PEOPLE TOOK CARE OF ME AND I STILL HAVE FOLKS FROM MOBILE WHO KEEP IN TOUCH. I JUST SAW THEM LAST WEEK. MY IMPRESSION WAS WHEN I GOT THERE, I IMMEDIATELY BECAME A PERSON WITHOUT A FACE. LET ME TRANSLATE THAT. I LOST MY IDENTITY. I WAS A REPORTER IN CHINA AND NOW I'M ON CAMPUS. I COULD NOT QUITE COMMUNICATE WELL ENOUGH. I TOOK A TAPE RECORDER TO MY CLASSES AND RECORDED EVERYTHING. I WENT BACK HOME TO PLAY BACK OVER AND OVER AGAIN AND SOMETIMES I NEEDED HELP FROM A FRIEND TO TRANSLATE THE SOUTHERN DRAWL FOR ME. SERIOUSLY, I HAD A HARD TIME UNDERSTANDING THE SOUTHERN ACCENT. FOR ME, IT WAS A NEW PLACE. I KNOW IT WASN'T HARVARD OR YALE OR PRINCETON, BUT IT WAS A GOOD PLACE AND IT ALLOWS ME TO SEE A LOT OF RELATIONSHIPS UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL. I WAS RIGHT IN THE MIDST OF THIS EGG DIVISION THAT I DID NOT UNDERSTAND. I HAVE MY HIGHEST RESPECT. I WAS NOT WHITE, I WAS NOT LACK, SO I WAS LOST IN THAT DIVISION. ON TOP OF THAT, I WAS A FOREIGN STUDENT. I DID NOT HAVE A VOICE OR IDENTITY. I FELT LIKE I WAS FACELESS. DOES THAT ANSWER YOUR QUESTION? ANYONE ELSE?

>> [INAUDIBLE]

DOTTIE: I DON'T KNOW IF THERE'S A SINGLE EVENT. I WAS AT TV AND C-SPAN. MY FATHER IS A JOURNALIST AND HE WAS TEACHING AT LOCAL UNIVERSITIES. HE WAS A NOTED JOURNALIST AND WAS OFTEN ASKED TO SPEAK. MY GRANDFATHER WAS A FAMOUS PROFESSOR AT TAKING UNIVERSITY. MY MOTHER WAS A SCHOOLTEACHER. WE HAVE THAT TEACHING BLOOD IN OUR FAMILY, SO I LOVE TO PROVIDE SOMETHING THAT WOULD PROVIDE SOME INDIVIDUALS. IT PROVIDES SOME INSIGHT INTO THE PERSON I HAVE BECOME. I WOULD LIKE TO MAKE THEM INTO SPEECHES, IF YOU WILL. RECENTLY, I WAS GIVING A TALK AT MY CHURCH ABOUT MY ASIAN AMERICAN JOURNEY AND I WAS WRITING THE SCRIPT, MY TALKING POINTS, AND I ALMOST TOOK OFF ON A TANGENT. IT WAS A STROLLER IN MY FAMILY FOR ABOUT 50 YEARS AND I SAID I'M GOING TO TALK ABOUT THAT STROLLER ONE DAY. AFTER THAT TALK IN CHURCH, I WENT HOME AND WROTE ANOTHER SCRIPT, JUST A BASELINE THAT I'M GOING TO TELL THE STROLLER STORY ONE DAY. SO I CAN'T WAIT TO TELL THE STORY. SO I FIND LITTLE THINGS IN MY LIFE AND EVEN ABOUT PEOPLE. I HAVE ONE STORY TO TELL ABOUT A PERSON I MET ON THE METRO ABOUT 20 YEARS AGO AND THIS IS A PERSON WITHOUT A FACE. I'M GOING TO WRITE ABOUT HER. A JAPANESE AMERICAN LADY ON THE METRO WITHOUT A FACE. WE HAVE EYES AND NOSE AND MOUTH -- SHE HAD HOLES ON HER FACE. IT TOUCHED ME SO MUCH, SO I THOUGHT I'M GOING TO WRITE THIS DOWN AND GIVE A TALK ABOUT THAT EXPERIENCE. I SPENT FIVE MINUTES WITH HER 20 YEARS AGO AND IT STILL HAS THAT IMPACTS ON ME. ARE WE GOOD? THANK YOU FOR JOINING US.

DOTTIE: GREAT QUESTION. HOW DO I MAINTAIN THE HERITAGE AND KEEP A BALANCE? I WAS BORN IN CHINA AND I'M GOING TO DO WHAT I CAN TO KEEP DEBT. YOU DON'T SEE ME AS A PERSON WITHOUT MY HERITAGE. I AM HANGING ON TO THAT HERITAGE AND PASSING IT ON. HE'S FIGHTING ME TO SAY AND NAIL. I'M GOING TO LOSE DAYS THAT SOME OF ROSETTA STONE'S MANDARIN -- JUST BECAUSE OF THAT. IT IS A POWERFUL TOOL FOR HIM TO BE MORE SUCCESSFUL AND OPENS UP A LOT OF THINGS. WHEN YOU HAVE AN AREA TO ACQUIRE DIFFERENT LANGUAGE, YOU PROCESS THINGS MUCH DIFFERENTLY. IN THE FUTURE, HE HAS MUCH MORE TO GO TO. SO, TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTION, WHEN I STARTED DOING THIS LINE OF WORK, I HAD SOME PUSHBACK FROM MY OWN COMMUNITY. THEY WERE TELLING ME WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE? TELLING US WHAT TO DO. I WAS HOLDING UP A MIRROR TO SAY HEY, ASIAN AMERICANS, WE HAVE A PROBLEM. THERE ARE CHALLENGES THAT ARE REAL AND PERCEIVED AND THE SAME PEOPLE WHO ARE EXCITED ABOUT THE WORK I WAS DOING, THEY WERE EMBRACING ME AND ENDORSING ME, SAYING WE NEED YOU TO HELP US. YOU HAVE TO HANG ONTO TO YOUR CULTURE BECAUSE THAT IS WHO YOU ARE. YOU NEED TO BE ABLE TO MAKE THAT TRANSITION. HOW DO YOU TRANSITION INTO A PLACE WHERE SOME OF THE THINGS WE DO OUR COMPLETELY SUCCESSFUL AND WE ARE NOT ALIENATED -- ALIENATING THE PEOPLE WE ARE SERVING. THANK YOU FOR ASKING. WITH THAT, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALLOWING ME TO BE WITH YOU ALL AND CELEBRATE ASIAN AMERICAN PACIFIC ISLANDER HERITAGE MONTH. THANK YOU FOR THE QUESTIONS. [APPLAUSE]

>> THANK YOU FOR YOUR PRESENTATION AND THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR ALL OF THE WONDERFUL QUESTIONS. I HAVE 20 MORE TO ASK YOU LATER. LET'S GIVE A ROUND OF APPLAUSE FOR MISS LEE. [APPLAUSE] I WOULD LIKE TO INTRODUCE -- TO GIVE THE CLOSING REMARKS.

>> THIS HAS BEEN AN ENLIGHTENING EXPERIENCE. IF WE COULD GIVE MISS LEE ANOTHER ROUND OF APPLAUSE. [APPLAUSE] I WOULD LIKE TO THANK HER FOR HER SECOND PRESENTATION. SHE WAS HERE THIS PAST MARCH FOR OUR WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH WHERE SHE SPOKE ON BRANDING FOR BUSINESS AND PERSONAL SUCCESS. SHE IS ALWAYS A DELIGHT TO WORK WITH AND WE ARE DELIGHTED TO HAVE YOU IN OUR NETWORK. THANK YOU FOR BEING SUCH A GRACES -- GRACIOUS MASTER CEREMONY, THANK YOU FOR THE INTRODUCTION OF OUR PRESENTER AND TO OUR PHOTOGRAPHER, MR. JAMES ANDERSON. A SPECIAL THANKS TO THE U.S. POSTAL SERVICE COLOR GUARD AND I WOULD LIKE TO THANK THOSE PARTICIPATING IN THE EVENT VIA WEBCAST. THIS CONCLUDES OUR PROGRAM. IT HAS BEEN A PLEASURE TO PRESENT THIS PROGRAM TO YOU TODAY. THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
